Dear SOB Final Sem Students,
As you reach the conclusion of your undergraduate studies over the next few weeks, I am sure that your thoughts are focused on the exciting career journey ahead and on the many decisions you are going to need to consider at the end of your Bachelor’s degree.
While many of you will be excited as you think about moving quickly into the workforce, I would also encourage you to take a few moments and consider the possibility of undertaking further studies at the postgraduate level, leading to a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree by research. We are presently receiving applications from students interested in MPhil studies and would be happy to hear also from you.
When you study for the MPhil at Curtin, there are ordinarily no required course offerings. You do not learn in class. Instead, you learn by working closely with a supervisor and a committee who guide you to undertake a research study in a field of mutual interest. You work largely at your own pace, reviewing the existing literature base, formulating a research problem and study design, collecting/analyzing data, and reporting your results in the form of a thesis.
Students completing the MPhil usually report the experience as one which sharpens critical thinking abilities, enhances your English language knowledge and allows you to develop the sort of specialized expertise that employers value as they sort through the hundreds of job applications received during each competition. Moreover, they often find that completing a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) like the MPhil provides an opportunity to contribute to the welfare and growth of their profession, their community and their nation.
If you are interested in pursuing Master’s level studies following your graduation, please just drop by my office or shoot me an e-mail and we can commence discussions on your prospective research ideas and the application process.
I look forward to hearing you.
